The Vancouver Classical Guitar Festival is back August 15-20th!  This year’s festival is designed as an intimate, intensive learning experience in the beautiful setting of the Deer Lake Gallery in Burnaby.   Registration is limited to just 20 students to ensure a more personalized environment.  VCGFest is a unique opportunity for guitarists of all levels to participate in masterclasses, workshops, guitar orchestra, a participants’ concert and to be inspired by faculty concerts by Jorge Caballero, Michael Kolk, Alec Pearson and Luis Medina.

Launched in 2020 by guitarist Luis Medina, the Vancouver Classical Guitar Festival has evolved into a much-anticipated annual celebration of classical guitar.  Dozens of guitarists from Metro Vancouver and beyond have participated in a week of masterclasses, workshops and faculty concerts with top-tier faculty from all over the world including Iliana Matos, Daniel Bolshoy, Marc Teicholz and Ben Verdery.

This year's VCGFest, presented in collaboration with the Vancouver Classic Guitar Society, is delighted to welcome to the faculty:

  • Jorge Caballero, Peruvian guitar virtuoso, guitar professor at the University of Toronto, recognized worldwide for his musicality in solo and chamber performances

  • Michael Kolk, called one of Canada’s most brilliant and expressive classical guitarists, known for performing solo, with major orchestras, and in the HK Duo, a Vancouver favourite

  • Julia Lockhart, principal bassoonist with the VSO, on overcoming performance anxiety

  • Anna Pietrzak, laureate of many European guitar competitions, PhD., pedagogue, recording artist, founder of Vancouver Guitar Orchestra

  • Simon Farintosh, award winning guitarist, composer, teacher, graduate of U. Victoria, currently pursuing a Doctorate in Musical Arts

  • Alec Pearson, UBC guitar instructor and composer, director of the Okanagan Guitar Festival

  • Lucida Zhao, our pianist in residence, sharing her passion for musicianship.

  • Luis Angel Medina, festival founder and director, current doctoral candidate at the University of Toronto, award winning guitarist specializing in repertoire from his native Mexico
